Frequently Asked Questions
What size of file do I need?
For giclee prints, a 300 DPI scan of your artwork or transparency is needed at 100% output size. For promotional materials such as lightjet prints or greeting cards, a 150 DPI scan is needed at 100% output size. In order to calculate this, use the following formulas: 300 DPI file: L x W x .2575 = # of MB 150 DPI file: L x W x .0644 = # of MB
What is included with my Cruse Scan?
From your Cruse Scan, you are supplied a CD with the following formats included: Large Master Scan (.tif file), 10MB (.tif) viewing file, and a 1MB (.jpg) file. These files are included on your CD so you are able to post the smaller files on your web site if needed. Besides giclee prints, the files may be used for photographic prints, slides, and also to produce promotional material.s
Are the scans color-corrected?
All types of scans are color-corrected to the best of our ability, then burned to a CD. If prints are being made, the scan is color corrected to the printer and papers being used.
Are the prints going to exactly match my painting or piece?
Although we can produce a very close match, we cannot guarantee an EXACT match. Due to the limitations of the color gamut of giclee printers and scanners, some shading and colors are not always attainable. We use the very best devices to capture the image as closely as possible and continuously strive to produce the closest match. Although we strive to make prints as good or better than the original, it may not be exact to the original. You paint with paint and the printer prints with ink after capturing the image with the use of light. Therefore, the print will never be an exact replica of your painting or piece, due to two different mediums, papers, etc.
Do I get to see a proof?
Yes. Once the painting has been dropped off at our facility, we do the proper scanning and color correcting to the digital file. Using a 5,000K Light Color-Correcting booth, we produce your first print at around an 8x10 size. We then ask you, the artist, to view the print (via mail or in person), and suggest any correction if needed. If the correction is possible, we then move forward with producing a second proof based on those corrections. If additional tweaking or major digital retouching is needed, additional charges may apply after the second proof. Once you have given the final approval, the final prints are then made .
Do I receive borders on my prints? Is my print protected?
All prints will receive a 2-inch border if printed on any of the fine art papers. Any print made on canvas will receive a 3-inch border for proper stretching. If your print is on fine art paper, it is not water-resistant. Treatment of these prints is available, but many fine art papers are framed under glass, eliminating the need for a water-resistant spray. We do recommend spraying canvasses however, due to the nature of the presentation. This is available for all prints for an additional charge. Many laminates are also available.
How long does the giclee process take?
The printing process for scan/giclee prints is typically about 5- 10 business days, but vary in length because of quantity projects, proofing time, mounting and finishing time, etc .
